Accessing News on the Darkweb

Accessing News on the Darkweb

An Abstract

In an era where internet censorship is increasingly used to control the flow of information, accessing unbiased news sources can become a challenge. Governments, organizations, or internet service providers (ISPs) may block certain news websites to suppress dissenting opinions, restrict foreign influence, or control political narratives.

By encrypting traffic and bouncing it through a global network of volunteer relays, Tor obscures a user’s identity and location, allowing them to access news content that may be geoblocked, throttled, or outright banned on the regular internet. Tor not only safeguards user privacy but also acts as a countermeasure against surveillance, ensuring that individuals can exercise their right to information even in heavily censored environments.

Tor “The Darkweb”

The dark web refers to a hidden part of the internet that is not visible to the internet as you are familiar with. It consists of websites that can only be accessed using specialized software, such as The Tor Browser.

Many of these sites use .onion addresses, which provide an extra layer of privacy and security by concealing both the user’s identity and the website’s hosting location. Unlike regular websites, .onion addresses are exclusively visible within the Tor network.

Example: The BBC
Regular Web: www.bbc.com/
Dark Web: bbcnewsd73hkzno2ini43t4gblxvycyac5aw4gnv7t2rccijh7745uqd.onion/
